My Daily Adventure

April 1, 2020April 1, 2020 dmjohnsonauthor

Today’s adventure in writing was a quick immersion in all things WordPress with my son. As I learn my way around the program, this site will improve by leaps and bounds! Hang in there with me. I assure you practice makes as perfect as imperfect I can make this site:)

Today, I want to direct your attention to the actual nuts and bolts of your physical book. You have many choices to make. Board books and pillow books are generally for the infant to 24 month old child. They can grip them, gum them, throw them on the floor, or slap the family pet and still not destroy the book, generally speaking. No? You want regular paper? Okay. What bond or weight of paper do you want? Keep in mind the paper you buy for your printer at home is usually 20# or 24# bond. At the commercial printer, the term used for paper is “offset” with 60# offset used most frequently for book pages. 50# would work, as well. For comparison and to get the feel of 60# offset paper, just rub a sheet of 24# bond printer paper between your thumb and index finger. The higher the number, the heavier the paper is. The higher the number, the more each sheet of paper will cost.
Illustrations or no illustrations. I am making the assumption your book is a picture book! Keep in mind the age of the audience of your book. A younger child will be more interested in the pictures than the words. When creating the story board for my illustrator, I knew I wanted full page illustrations. Decide what the physical size of your book will be. Your illustrator will need to know this. Of course, if you are the author and illustrator, you can have some really lively conversations with yourself as you go through this process!
Read a book this Valentine's Day! It has fewer calories than candy and lasts longer than flowers. A book will let you relax in your favorite chair with your favorite beverage while providing the entertainment.

How long is the attention span of your target audience? If you are writing for a pre-schooler, you know it probably isn’t very long! The target age group of the audience you hope to attract will determine how many pages your book should be. The industry standard general guideline for a children’s picture book I have found is as follows:
I love this quote. Of the many ways to express one's freedom, I think the arts are an amazing outlet. Freedom to imagine, create, educate, articulate, collaborate, engage, expand, shape, educate and have fun while doing so. As a first-time children's book author, I have had the opportunity to do all of the above and more! Check out my blog at www.dmjohnsonauthor.net for posts on my writing journey. Just write the first sentence!
